At the Party Conference on Sunday, I mentioned our need to be more aware of big changes in the world around us. I gave the example of Tianjin: a vibrant Chinese city that is building itself up to rival Beijing and Shanghai.
Yesterday Straits Times reported that another Chinese city, Chongqing, is trying to become a top outsourcing destination. It is pursuing a Shi Bai Qian Wan “十百千万” strategy to grow 10 (十) outsourcing zones, nurture one million (百万) IT graduates and attract 1,000 (千) global customers, i.e. 1,000 businesses outsourcing their operations to Chongqing.
Although the article doesn’t say so, some of Chongqing’s global customers may well be from Singapore. We must be alive to this external environment, so that we can be mentally prepared for what the future holds, and gear ourselves up for a competitive but exciting world. – LHL
